A NURSE from Uttoxeter is planning to walk the length of the Trent and Mersey Canal as part of a fund-raising drive for Prostate Cancer UK.
Carolyn Green will be joined by friend and retired nurse Rosemary Young along with a group of friends as they tackle the trek.
The women are planning a series of 20-mile hikes as they follow the course of the 93-mile-long historic waterway.
Carolyn said: “We are both registered nurses who have cared for many men who have experienced prostate cancer. It is not as easy journey for these gents, the worry of waiting for results, the treatment and how will recovery be afterwards, will everything be ok, will I be the same person? These are just some of the thoughts.”
Around 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. The three main risk factors include:
• Getting older (it mainly affects men aged 50 or older)
• Having a family history of prostate cancer
• Being black
Prostate Cancer UK is a national charity dedicated to providing information, advice and support to men who have prostate cancer and their families.
The charity also has a team of specialist nurses and funds research into the causes and possible treatments of the disease. Carolyn added: “Prostate Cancer UK is a superb support network and charity for gents who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“This is why this year we want to raise money for this excellent cause whilst doing this walk in a COVID safe way. The walk will be undertaken in bite sized chunks over a few days. Please will you support us and give generously. Our first main walk is on April 30 from Shardlow to Barton under Needwood.”
