A couple who swapped careers in education for running a Cheadle pub have thanked townsfolk for their generosity and support.
Tony and Jan Dickens invested in The Swan at Town End, Cheadle, 16 years ago and are now bidding farewell to the town as they retire.
The couple sold the pub earlier this year and will be moving out of the town in the coming weeks.
Tony is a former head teacher and held the national role of head of education consultant, while Jan’s administration background led her to a role as operations manager for an education training company in the south of the UK.
Tony said: “We both have family in the north and the south and needed to be in the middle – geographically Cheadle was the ideal spot.
“We both knew a bit about running pubs and we wanted to invest in a business with accommodation and pubs fit the bill.
“We have loved it. We’ve loved being in Cheadle and have met so many nice people. Our customer base was so generous we’ve been able to raise thousands of pounds for various charities over the years.
“We’ve retired from education and from the pub. We’d been looking at retiring for a little while and it came to fruition this year.
“The pub is now closed and has been sold.
“We are moving to Stone and plan to put our feet up for 12 months while we decide what our future holds, but we will be popping back into Cheadle now and again.”
Tony added: “We’d just like to thank all our customers for their brilliant support over the years, for all the good things they have done for charity while we’ve been here and wish them well for the future. It’s been a pleasure.”
