A World War II veteran from Oakamoor has died at the age of 104.
William Beaumont, known as Bill, passed away peacefully at his home on March 31 with family at his side.
A funeral for Bill will be held at St Chad’s in Freehay on Saturday (April 23).
Born on May 14 1917 to Alfred and Mary Beaumont, Bill was brought up in Oakamoor with his three brothers Norman, George and James.
In 1937, at a Bolton’s dance, Bill met Edna and the couple married at Rushton in 1940.
Shortly after their marriage, Bill joined the Army, serving with the artillery and being largely stationed in the Orkneys.
After the war, the couple moved to Foxt, where their oldest son, Barry, was born in 1945.
Bill was working as a lorry driver and the family moved to Blythe Bridge where younger son David was born in 1949.
Following a move to Rough Close, the family then moved to a shop in Cheadle where Edna set up a hairdressers’ and sewing business, while Bill became a bus driver for PMT.
In 1957, the couple bought a bungalow in Freehay, before moving again to Oakamoor in 1966.
In 1975, they sold the businesses and spent three months touring abroad before taking on a self-build project on land purchased from Thomas Boltons.
The couple built a bungalow and lived there together for the next 41 years.
On January 28, 2018, Bill’s beloved Edna passed away.
He remained in their home, living independently, with support from their two sons until his peaceful passing at the age of 104.
A funeral for Bill is at 1.30pm on Saturday, April 23 at St Chad’s Church, Freehay and will be followed by a wake at Greatwood Hall in Tean.
