Dugout shelters trashed by yobs

FOOTBALLERS visiting one of the town’s main sports grounds have been left out in the cold after vandals trashed both dugout shelters.
The two upvc plastic and glass structures had been sited at the Thorley Drive Sports Ground off Thorley Drive in Cheadle but fell foul of vandals who swooped in on the facility at some point during the last week.
After receiving a call from members of Cheadle United football club shortly after the discovery had been made, Councillor Ian Whitehouse was one of the first on the scene.
He told the Times and Echo: “The vandalism was discovered when players turned up for the game on Sunday morning, it could have happened overnight but no-one really knows because it’s a bit out of the way up there.
“I received a call from one of the coaches and went straight up to see what had happened.
“Vandals have completely trashed the two dugouts which had been put in for coaches and players to shelter in during matches.
“This is the second incident of  vandalism and I blame it partly on a lack of proper facilities for youngsters.  I know boredom is no excuse for this but it really doesn’t help.
“There are CCTV cameras installed at the sports ground which is being checked.”
Councillor Whitehouse concluded: “This sports ground is one of Cheadle’s best assets and it would be good if the police could have a look up there from time to time, especially now that the lighter nights are here.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
