More than half a million people have fled the country amidst the Russian invasion with civilians among those killed in the bombings and raids.
Many are staying to pick up arms and defend their country while others are sheltering in bunkers beneath the ground, a large number of whom are women and children.
Cllr Phil Routledge alongside Cheadle Mayor Cllr Sue Walley, both members of Cheadle Town Council, have launched an appeal for items to send to Eastern Europe to provide those in need with much-needed essentials.
They have joined an initiative spearheaded by Sacred Heart Church in Hanley, who are sending the goods over to Ukraine and neighbouring areas.
The community is being asked to donate large plasters, bandages, shaving foam, disposable razors, thermal vests, sleeping bags, blankets, nappies, baby products and other toiletries with warm clothes for all ages and genders also required.
Donations are being collected by Natalie Staton of Country Interiors on High Street in Cheadle.
From there, each Sunday, somebody will deliver the items to Sacred Heart Church, who will then send off the donations.
Cllr Routledge told the Times & Echo about how he felt compelled to act amidst the tragedy.
He said: “I saw what state the people out there are in, especially children and kids, and you’d just hate to think it’s your children wouldn’t you?
“Your family stuck out there in a war zone in Europe in this modern age.”
Country Interiors is open on Mondays, Tuesday and Fridays from 9am to 5pm and Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.
