Red maple is a tribute to inspiring teacher
STUDENTS have planted a tree as a lasting tribute to ‘inspirational’ teacher, Craig Beverley.
Pupils at The Cheadle Academy invited Mr Beverley’s widow, Lisa, to join them for a poignant planting ceremony on Thursday 4th May.
The 15’ vibrant red maple tree was planted in front of the school and students tied messages of remembrance to it.
A post and rail surround will be put in place once the tree is in situ along with a guitar-shaped plaque and a bench where students can sit under the tree’s shady canopy.
Teacher at the school, Sarah Booth said: “Apart from being an outstanding teacher of history and vice-principal of The Academy, Mr Beverley loved writing, playing and singing songs and was a member of the band Elivs Fontenot and the Sugarbees.
“The tree-planting was a very moving and special moment.
“We had some students from the student council and some who have since moved on to Moorlands Sixth Form – many had been in his year group or tutor group.
“Lisa was invited and it was lovely to see her and for her to see this tree which is tall and vibrant, just like him.
“This was something the students wanted to do, which they have raised the money for and it is really lovely that he is remembered in that way. It is there for all to see when we come in to school.”
The students used luggage ties to write messages of thanks and pay tribute to their teacher, who died in October.
Mrs Booth added: “The messages are really touching and talk about how inspirational he was.
“He always wanted people to be the best they could be.
‘The principal and chair of governers attended the ceremony as well.
“Everybody was gathered round and although it was just a small ceremony, it was very meaningful and poignant.”
