Morrisons supermarket in Cheadle has been supporting Cheadle and District Foodbank from the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown.
As a business they have provided bulk items as part of their national support package. In addition to this they have allowed the local foodbank to site a trolley in the store to collect donations from their customers and the community.
Foodbank Project Manager Diane White recently visited Morrisons to present a certificate of recognition to Janet Calderhead, the store’s Community Champion.
Foodbank treasurer Dave Sargeant said: “Janet has done a fantastic job supporting us.
“The certificate is to Morrison’s and their customers in recognition for donating 5.083 tons of food this year.
“Cheadle and District Foodbank would like to thank Morrisons, their staff and their customers for the fantastic support under these challenging circumstances.”
Meanwhile, Millennium Dentistry in Cheadle have also been supporting the town’s foodbank.
They recently donated an amount of food as well as a cheque for £300.
Dave said: “Millennium have been supporting us throughout the year with both food and cash.
“We would like to thank Millennium for their ongoing support.”
Cheadle and District Foodbank, which opened in 2014, is situated within the Guild Hall in Tape Street.
During 2020, food donations more than doubled and there was 45 per cent increase in the number of children fed by the foodbank.
Food given out to clients increased by 60 per cent, and there was a 25 per cent increase in the size of food parcels given out.
A spokesman recently posted the above data on the foodbank’s Facebook page, and said: “As many of you are aware 2020 has been a busy year for foodbanks and this data shows that at Cheadle and District we have been no exception.
“A huge thank you for all your donations without which none of this would be possible.
“We wish you all a peaceful and safe Christmas.”
