TWO TEENAGERS from the Moorlands have shaved their heads as part of a challenge that aims to raise money for the NHS as it battles the outbreak of coronavirus. Friends Joe Avery, from Cheadle, and Alfie Walford, from Kingsley, both joined in the 'CovHead-19 Challenge' that invites people to sponsor others to shave their heads to try to “donate some money to a good cause and create some positives out of a bad situation.” Joe explained how he got involved with the initiative, which was set up by NHS Charities Together.
“It came about after one of my mates, Alfie, did it about a week ago and I saw him do it and it became a bit of a group project as part of the CovHead-19 Challenge,” he told the Times and Echo.
“When we did the shave my mum and younger brother were there and we face-timed my family and girlfriend.
“Then I shared it on Facebook and friends and family donated money towards it.”
The nationwide initiative has so far raised more than £33,000 for the NHS with people from all around the UK donating to the cause by the hour.
Joe said having a shaved head was “a bit different” but hopes that his and Alfie’s act can inspire others to do something that will help raise money for the NHS.
“Me and Alfie have had longish hair for as long as I can remember, so it feels a bit different – I can’t feel my own hair when I wake up,” he laughed.
“It’s about giving something for people to laugh about for an hour and raise some money too.
“Hopefully it’ll encourage one other person to raise a couple of hundred quid too and then another person does it from them doing it.
“I think every little bit does help and you can have a laugh at the same time.”
A Just Giving page set up for the CovHead-19 Challenge reads: “We want to help raise funds for NHS Charities Together who help allocate the funding and supplies to over 250 charities that support the NHS across the UK.
“Whilst we’re stuck at home during this unprecedented time due to Covid-19, let’s help by shaving your own #CovHead-19.
“Let’s have some fun, donate some money to a good cause and create some positives out of a bad situation.
“Let’s help provide the NHS with the support they need to help us through this time.”
