£250,000 agreed for sports village

A council has set aside £250,000 to spend on the first phase of a ‘sports village’ project in a Moorlands town. Members of the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) Cabinet met last Tuesday (March 29) to debate and sign off the funding for a project entitled ‘Birchall Sports Village’ for Leek.

The organisers of a popular community event in the Moorlands, which brings in hundreds of visitors, are unhappy that they will not be able to use a public indoor building as part of their event, alike to past years. The North Staffs Jester’s Club’s 2022 Scooterfest is set to take place on Sunday, May 22. The popular event sees hundreds of scooter enthusiasts visit the Moorlands town on their two-wheelers, and also hundreds more visitors to the town to enjoy the community extravaganza.

More than £26,500 has been spent on producing a food guide for the Staffordshire Moorlands district. The total cost of £26,593 has been spent by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and part paid for by the council’s share of the Government’s Welcome Back Fund.

More than 2,200 people have signed a petition against car parking changes set for a Moorlands town. The changes for the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) run car parks in Leek include increasing car parking fees, as well as increasing the charging times from between 9.30am-3.30pm, to 8am until 6pm instead.

All change for car parking in town

Car parking charges – and the hours they apply – have been increased across for certain car parks in Leek and the Staffordshire Moorlands. The new charges, which will be enforced from 8am to 6pm instead of 9.30am to 3.30pm, are expected to be brought in at the start of the new financial year in April, after they were agreed by a meeting of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council’s Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday, February 8).

Tourist Information Centre set to be relocated

District council run car parks in Leek are set for tariff increases and charging hours on Monday to Saturday are due to be extended from 9.30am and 3.30pm to between 8am and 6pm.
