A Moorlands man is pedalling his way to raise funds for charity. Justin Twigg, who lives in Leek, has taken on the ‘Cycle The Month’ in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay will visit the Moorlands during its final journey through England this summer as the full route is revealed. It’s the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – a journey which brings together and celebrates communities across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games. It’s set to travel the length and breadth of England for 29 days before culminating at the opening ceremony for Birmingham 2022 on July 28.

A new community group is to be set up to tackle concerns over access to fields next to a popular walking route in the Moorlands. Leek councillors Charlotte Atkins and Bill Cawley hosted a public meeting on Friday (May 13) at the Salvation Army Centre in Salisbury Street in Leek.

A large scale traditional event in the Moorlands is making a welcome comeback after a two year break due to the coronavirus pandemic. Leek Club day, also known as Walking Round Day, has been a tradition in the Moorlands town for more than 200 years.

A marina project based at Cornhill in Leek will be led by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council after a developer found it to be commercially unviable. The marina was part of an ambitious mixed development on the former industrial land, which would bring housing, employment and leisure units to the town, along with a link road, railway station and the waterside facilities.

Market traders have spoken of their “delight” that they have been able to move back to their old pitches in a Moorlands town once more. Last week, we reported that the new leader of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, councillor Paul Roberts, had made a u-turn on the previous leader, councillor Sybil Ralph’s decision for Wednesday market stalls, which had been put along Derby Street for the past few years, to go back on the Market Place.

A host of music from across the decades is set to be used to entertain crowds at a Moorlands town event. This year’s Party in the Park, which is organised by Leek Town Council, is set to have the added celebrations of joining in on the nation’s events for the Queens’ Platinum Jubilee.

A Moorlands man has joined a team of mission trippers to help those affected by war-torn Ukraine. Leek man Paul Chauveau joined the Macclesfield Ukrainian Aid team recently to help drive much-needed supplies and vehicles over to the Polish/Ukrainian border.

An aid support initiative in the Moorlands has helped a similar scheme with its latest humanitarian aid campaign. The Leek and Cheddleton Aid Support for Ukraine Centre, which is based at Bank House in Leek, has provided lots of much-needed medical supplies and other donations, which were picked up by representatives of Ambulance Aid yesterday (Tuesday, May 3) and are now making their way to help those affected by war-torn Ukraine.

A youth charity in the Moorlands is on the look-out for additional help and support. The Leek Youth Project, @21 – which is based in Market Street - provides facilities, support, and activities for young people, particularly those facing difficulties.

Another load of much-needed aid supplies are heading their way from the Moorlands to those affected by war-torn Ukraine. The ‘Leek and Cheddleton Aid Support for Ukraine’ is continuing to collect donations at the Leek Town Council owned Bank House in St Edward Street, Leek.
