Meetings to be held behind closed doors

The date has been set for the first of new regular ’closed doors’ meetings to be held by a town council. Leek Town Council has agreed to start meeting confidentially – with no public or press allowed to attend – with meetings which they have entitled ‘Forward Planning Meetings.’

Council is updated on crime figures

Anti-social behaviour is on the decrease in a Moorlands town but rape is on the increase – according to a Police report presented to community leaders last week. Although no representative from Staffordshire Police was able to attend last week’s monthly Leek Town Council meeting, a report was sent in from the force and circulated to councillors ahead of the meeting which took place on Tuesday, January 18.

CCTV cameras to be looked at for park

A town council is set to look into the possibility of installing CCTV cameras and also recycling bins at a public park – in a bid to deter the area being littered with broken glass. The motion follows a number of residents contacting Leek Town Council about glass bottles – some broken - which are being left by the shelter on Ball Haye Green Recreational Grounds in Leek.

Repairs set to make town centre area safe

A county council has confirmed that road and pavement repairs are set to take place to make an area within a Moorlands town centre safe. The confirmation from Staffordshire County Council regarding the Ashbourne Road and Haywood Street junction in Leek, where kerb stones and pavement slabs have been damaged, comes after Leek Town councillor Stephen Wales has written to the highways department at the county council.

Concern has been raised over the poor advertising of a free car parking initiative at the weekend in the Moorlands. Lots of car park users and residents took to social media at the weekend with their concerns about the lack of advertising for the free parking initiative in Leek on the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) owned car parks on Saturday (December 4).

“Leek has a fantastic community”

A long-serving town clerk in the Moorlands is set to retire from her role after more than 15 years. Julie Taylor has been Leek Town Council’s Clerk for over 17 years, and has recently announced that she will be retiring from the role in February.
