A number of community organisations have benefitted from the first round of donations which have been made by a new charitable foundation. Following the launch of Leek United Building Society’s Charitable Foundation in April this year, its Board of Trustees recently met to discuss the first round of grant applications that it had received.

Two large donations have been handed out by the former town mayor. Councillor Lyn Swindlehurst served as Leek Town Mayor for the 2021/22 civic year. During her 12 months in office she hosted a series of events which raised more than £4,000.

More than £8,500 has been donated from cash raised at a royal themed celebration in East Staffordshire. A total of £8,552 was raised at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration which was held at Uttoxeter Racecourse last month.

A fundraising group in the moorlands has handed out its latest donations to the community. Haregate In Action hosts a series events in the Haregate area of Leek, with all funds raised used to improve the area.

A humanitarian aid initiative in a Moorlands town is continuing to strive. We reported last month that Bank House in St Edward Street, Leek, has become a hub for people to drop off donations of items and cash to help those affected by war-torn Ukraine.

A community in the Moorlands has pulled together to continue collecting much-needed items for those affected by the situation in war-torn Ukraine. Last week, we reported that a group of mums who live in Leek and Cheddleton, had started a kind-hearted initiative to collect items to be sent out to those still in Ukraine, as well as to those who have fled to neighbouring Poland.

Police officers in Leek helped spread the festive cheer ahead of the big day last week by donating items to help members of the community. Officers from Staffordshire Moorlands Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), attended Haregate Community Centre in Queens Drive, Leek on Monday, December 20, to present them with donations including furniture, cooking appliances and tools.

Five charities have been handed generous amounts of cash from the funds of a community action group that is soon to disband. Gill Mason has been the chairperson of Cheadle-based Hammersley Hayes Residents Action Group, which is now winding down, since 2004.

A dog rescue charity is appealing for donations to help purchase an animal ambulance. Luosko German Shepherd Dog Rescue in Cheadle is hoping to purchase such a vehicle to be able to help even more animals in need.
