A town council has given a town crier £100 towards the cost of an event he put on for HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – but the decision whether to make the donation was made behind closed doors. The Leek & Moorlands Echo challenged Leek Town Council when they moved the agenda item about a donation request from Leek Town Crier Bill Lomas at their meeting last Tuesday (June 21) to confidential – part way through the meeting.

A SELFLESS father has donated millions of his stem cells to help a patient with a life-threatening illness after he came up as a match for the sufferer. Joe Marlow, from Tean, had been on a stem cell register for over three years after becoming involved with organisation DKMS (standing for “Deutsche KnochenMarkSpenderdatei” which means “German Bone Marrow Donor File” in German) through a family member. Joe recently received the news that he had come up as a match for a patient and was asked if he could go down to London as soon as it was possible so the patient could receive treatment.

BOUNDARY walls at a village church have been repaired with help from JCB. The digger giant donated £5,000 towards vital renovations at the Church of St John the Evangelist in Hollington. The historic Grade II listed building is just a few miles from JCB’s World Headquarters in Rocester.
