Temporary control zones on premises with birds have been put in place after a case of avian flu was identified near Cheadle. A commercial poultry business, based near Alton, is at the centre of a strict control zone with a 3km radius, which means any captive birds, including pets, must be isolated.

A THIRD theft of lambs in East Staffordshire has seen 13 lambs taken from a field at Denstone. The crime follows thefts of livestock at Yoxall and Needwood in the last few weeks. Police are investigating the thefts and are carrying out high visibility patrols in rural areas.

A PARISH council has painted a mural on a bus shelter in memory of a “very popular” village resident – something that has “cheered the village up,” according to a close friend. Denstone Parish Council commissioned the design of a barn-themed mural on a bus shelter initially as part of their annual Best Kept Village Competition bid before later forming it into a commemoration to Rose Edge, a much-loved pillar of the community. As part of the village’s 2019 submission for the competition, it was mooted in a parish council meeting that the structure should be painted.

A SPECIAL bond has formed between a retired teacher and an abandoned dog thanks to volunteers at a Cheadle animal charity. Liz Bailey, 74, from Denstone, was devastated after the loss of her canine companion, Jessie, last month. But after reading about the work of Cheadle and District Animal Welfare Society (CAWS) in the Times and Echo, Liz got in touch with the charity and found solace in Max – a 14 year old collie cross.

A FORMER canal route is set to be mile-posted to assist walkers using the route. The current project by the Caldon and Uttoxeter Canals Trust (CUCT) is to establish a line of the Uttoxeter Canal and create a walking route aided by the reinstallation of mileposts. The trust has been successful in gaining a number of donations for the project – including £250 from Uttoxeter Town Council.

The Ramblers' Retreat at Alton and Denstone Hall Farm Shop and Cafe have both been shortlisted for the Taste of Staffordshire Good Food Awards 2018. The businesses will discover if they've won their categories at a glittering awards ceremony at Uttoxeter Racecourse later this month.
