Academy temporarily closed and students asked to self isolate

Around 100 students at an academy have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days after one student tested positive for Covid-19. The request to the 100 students was made by staff at the JCB Academy in Rocester.

Factory workers sent home to self isolate

Twenty factory workers have been sent home to self-isolate after one of their colleagues tested positive for Covid-19. The colleagues, who work at JCB's Rocester site, were sent home last Friday (August 28).

Virus halts Uttoxeter Poppy Appeal

STREET and supermarket collections for the Poppy Appeal will not take place in Uttoxeter this year. The coronavirus pandemic poses too much of a risk to volunteers for the annual appeal – many of whom are over 70. A question mark remains over Remembrance Services and how they will take place in November.

Uttoxeter is back in business!

SHOPS classed as ‘non-essential’ are re-opening in Uttoxeter’s town centre for the first time since March. Many retailers closed when the UK Government ordered a lockdown in a bid to combat the coronavirus pandemic. But further easing announced last month came into force on Monday, with many high street shops opening for the first time in 12 weeks.

Nancie-Mae’s loom band plan for NHS

A SIX-year-old from Uttoxeter has been raising funds for NHS staff and key-workers by selling home-made bracelets. Nancie-Mae Johnson has been making bracelets out of loom bands in a bid to support workers on the front line. So far she has raised more than £60 and - with help from mum Michelle Johnson-Plant - has posted her creations across the Midlands and even across the world.

A WATER company is urging people across the Uttoxeter area to maintain social distancing while its staff are working outdoors. South Staffs Water is asking customers to give them a ‘Wave4Water’ and maintain the two-metre rule, if meeting employees out on site.

Visor design boosts school PPE production

VISORS designed by a Uttoxeter school teacher are being copied around the world as schools and businesses scramble to provide kit for frontline medics. Graeme Quigley, Head of Design and Technology at Thomas Alleyne’s High School, created a reusable visor design that can be made in school using a laser cutter. Organisations and schools across the UK – and the world – are using Graeme’s design after he posted a video tutorial which has now been downloaded more than 6,000 times.

Olympic champion raises thousands for NHS

AN OLYMPIC gold medallist from Staffordshire has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the NHS as health workers continue to tackle coronavirus. Global swimming sensation Adam Peaty MBE from Uttoxeter raffled off his Team GB 2016 Olympic Racing Trunks over the weekend to help raise money for the service to purchase personal protective equipment after taking part in a 100km exercise bike ride to raise yet more funds last week. The six-time Male European Swimmer of the Year selected the winning ticket on Friday, and managed to raise more than £13,000 for NHS charities on top of the £4,000 that was donated during his 100km exercise bike ride challenge – meaning altogether Adam managed to bring in more than £17,000.

Cheadle Young farmers are still having fun ‘together’ with toilet roll challenge

A GROUP of farming youngsters has brought some cheer to the agricultural community by recording a ‘toilet roll challenge’ video. Cheadle Young Farmers Club (YFC) has conducted its own version of the viral online fad that consists of a collection of people to do something funny or skilful with a roll of toilet paper. Participants receive the loo roll from someone off camera before throwing it off camera again in the opposite direction and then this is edited to look like members are throwing the toilet roll to one another in sequence.

Crocheting for the homeless and care workers

A RESIDENT in the Moorlands has used her crocheting talents to create scarves and hats for the homeless as well as designs for frontline key workers too. Amanda Hollins, from Tean, took up the art of crocheting three years ago after seeing people have a go at it on YouTube. Since then she has donated her work to numerous charities over the years, such as Alzheimer's UK and the Royal British Legion.

Elvis tribute act raises money while raising roofs

AN ONLINE Elvis tribute show has brought in thousands of pounds for the NHS after social media users donated money while enjoying a resident’s hour-and-20-minute live-stream performance. Mark Clay, from Saverley Green near Fulford, has managed to raise over £5,300 for frontline health workers to help them battle the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The 50-year-old has done a lot of charity gigs around the area for a number of years and, after talking with wife Claire, decided to still put on a show for a good cause on Saturday despite being in lockdown.
