Trestle market plans set to be re-evaluated

Plans to reconfigure and refurbish an indoor market in the Moorlands are set to be re-evaluated by a council. We reported in March that Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) had unveiled plans to spend in the region of £435,000 for a project in the Trestle Market in Leek which would see: “The improved facilities will support the establishment of permanent units for retail, food and beverage uses.”

A new leader of a district council has been voted in – after the former was voted out by fellow councillors. Last week’s Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Annual Meeting of the Full Council saw a motion put forward to “remove the current leader of the council (councillor Sybil Ralphs) from post.”

Members of the Staffordshire Moorlands Conservative Group have voted in a new leader. Councillor Sybil Ralphs has been leader of the group for 15 years but has now been voted out as their leader by fellow Tories and replaced by councillor Paul Roberts.

A town councillor has called for the leader of a district council to step down and retire. In an open email, shared with the Leek & Moorlands Echo, Leek town councillor Roy Molson, who is a member of the Conservative party, has called for the leader of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC), councillor Sybil Ralphs, who is also a Conservative, to retire.

“Council is disappointed and frustrated about the issues”

A community leader has confirmed that she will be “disputing the delivery” of a gift guide which cost £17,000 to produce. The statement from councillor Sybil Ralphs, who is the leader of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, comes after many residents, as well as businesses, across the Moorlands have stated that they never received a copy of the SMDC Christmas Gift Guide which was produced using part of the Government’s Welcome Back Funding.

A number of market traders have quit an outdoor market in the Moorlands after their stalls were relocated. Iona Robertson, and a number of other traders, have quit their outdoor pitches at Leek’s Wednesday Outdoor Market after their stalls were relocated from Derby Street onto the Market Place.

Deadline looming for town survey

A council is urging residents in a Moorlands town to have their say about the possible regeneration of their town by taking part in a survey. However, a number of residents in Cheadle have raised concern that they have not yet received a copy of the survey and accompanying newsletter about the initiative, even though Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has stated that all households in the town should have received one through their doors earlier this month.
