Landlady Lisa to shave off locks in lock down

A VILLAGE landlady is planning to shave her locks during lock down in support of friends working on the frontline of the fight against coronavirus. Lisa Cowell, landlady at the Bagot Arms in Abbots Bromley, has already gathered more than £1,000 in donations ahead of the stunt which will take place on Sunday, May 3.

Visor design boosts school PPE production

VISORS designed by a Uttoxeter school teacher are being copied around the world as schools and businesses scramble to provide kit for frontline medics. Graeme Quigley, Head of Design and Technology at Thomas Alleyne’s High School, created a reusable visor design that can be made in school using a laser cutter. Organisations and schools across the UK – and the world – are using Graeme’s design after he posted a video tutorial which has now been downloaded more than 6,000 times.

Couple help JCB with community initiative

A Moorlands couple are helping a large manufacturing firm to step up its food aid programme to cater for homeless people in North Staffordshire. Since the launch of the JCB ‘Food for our Communities’ programme – the idea of Lady Bamford, wife of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford – the company has provided more than 3,600 cottage pies for disadvantaged people across the area.

A Moorlands business has shown a great act of kindness after staff repaired a nurse's vehicle free of charge. Airfawn in Cheadle offered to fix an NHS worker's car for free as a thank you for the work she is doing on the frontline fighting against the coronavirus outbreak.

Grants are being dished out to businesses across the Moorlands

More than 1,000 Moorlands businesses have received over £12.2 million pounds in grant funding to help them through the coronavirus emergency – with hundreds more set for pay outs in the coming days. Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is currently processing applications for the Government’s small business and retail, hospitality and leisure grant funds and has received £25 million to distribute.

Olympic champion raises thousands for NHS

AN OLYMPIC gold medallist from Staffordshire has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the NHS as health workers continue to tackle coronavirus. Global swimming sensation Adam Peaty MBE from Uttoxeter raffled off his Team GB 2016 Olympic Racing Trunks over the weekend to help raise money for the service to purchase personal protective equipment after taking part in a 100km exercise bike ride to raise yet more funds last week. The six-time Male European Swimmer of the Year selected the winning ticket on Friday, and managed to raise more than £13,000 for NHS charities on top of the £4,000 that was donated during his 100km exercise bike ride challenge – meaning altogether Adam managed to bring in more than £17,000.

Cheadle Young farmers are still having fun ‘together’ with toilet roll challenge

A GROUP of farming youngsters has brought some cheer to the agricultural community by recording a ‘toilet roll challenge’ video. Cheadle Young Farmers Club (YFC) has conducted its own version of the viral online fad that consists of a collection of people to do something funny or skilful with a roll of toilet paper. Participants receive the loo roll from someone off camera before throwing it off camera again in the opposite direction and then this is edited to look like members are throwing the toilet roll to one another in sequence.

Elvis tribute act raises money while raising roofs

AN ONLINE Elvis tribute show has brought in thousands of pounds for the NHS after social media users donated money while enjoying a resident’s hour-and-20-minute live-stream performance. Mark Clay, from Saverley Green near Fulford, has managed to raise over £5,300 for frontline health workers to help them battle the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The 50-year-old has done a lot of charity gigs around the area for a number of years and, after talking with wife Claire, decided to still put on a show for a good cause on Saturday despite being in lockdown.

Moorlands business fixes NHS staff’s vehicles for free

A MOORLANDS business has showed its incredible generous spirit by repairing the vehicles of NHS staff free of charge as a thank you for their tireless efforts on the frontline fighting the coronavirus outbreak. Emissions equipment manufacturer Klarius, which is based in Cheadle, has already fixed two NHS nurses' cars and has two more health service staff's vehicles booked in. The latest staff member to have her car mended is Sophy Kuriakose from Newcastle-under-Lyme and she told the Times and Echo she was “extremely grateful” for what Klarius had done.

Cheadle Hospital could be used to help care for coronavirus patients

A TOWN’S community hospital is set to be used to help care for coronavirus patients – if all the beds at a city hospital are filled. The news that beds at both Cheadle and Leek community hospitals in the Moorlands could be re-opened to help with the current battle with Covid-19, comes after many months of campaigning by various groups for the community hospitals to remain open. In a statement made yesterday, Tuesday, April 14, a spokesman for the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM), told the Times & Echo: “UHNM is working with health and social care partners to set up an extension of its hospital care provision to manage its Covid-19 response within hospitals across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

AN ONLINE quiz for children has been launched to help map Uttoxeter’s wildlife. The ‘Covid-19 lock down garden quiz’ was launched last week by Uttoxeter Nature Recovery Network (UNRN). The entrant with the highest score could win a deluxe hedgehog house for their school or care facility.
