A PACKED schedule of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of VE Day has been organised for a Moorlands town. A street party, the special planting of a dedicated tree and even the possibility of a fly-over are just some of the events set for Cheadle to mark the day in 1945 when allied forces in World War II accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. The weekend of jovial community activity will begin on Friday, May 8 and last until Sunday, May 10.

A VILLAGE pub has been saved by a community group. The Shrewsbury Arms in Kingstone closed its doors in May last year and following public meetings held in the village hall in October the Kingstone Community Society was formed with the vision of establishing a community hub within the property. Since then, the society has been working hard to raise the funds needed to purchase the property which went under an auctioneer's hammer last Wednesday – April 3.

A CAMPAIGN to raise funds to save a village pub for the community has been reached. The Kingstone Community Society, which has the vision of establishing a Community Hub in the village, has reached its £100,000 target of selling shares to try and save The Shrewsbury Arms which closed last summer. The Kingstone pub, locally known as the Shrew, closed its doors in May last year, and following two open meetings which were held in the village hall in October, where the community voted overwhelmingly to support the purchase of the pub, to be owned and run as a community asset and community hub; the Kingtsone Community Society was formed.

VILLAGERS have raised thousands of pounds to give a Uttoxeter man the chance of a more independent life. Robert Brindley, 40, of Windsor Road, Uttoxeter, hosted a celebratory open day last week, after a new bedroom and wet room were completed at his home. After more than four years sleeping in his kitchen, Robert, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 26, can now manoeuvre his wheelchair between his living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
