A Moorlands church will be hosting an open day this weekend as part of its bid to raise funds to add two new bells in its tower. St Peter’s Church in Alton currently has eight bells and it is hoped to raise enough money to have a further two bells installed.

A house fire at a Moorlands property, in which an elderly woman was tragically found deceased, was caused accidentally, Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service has confirmed. Firefighters were called to a blaze on Castle Hill Road in Alton at around 10.05am on Friday (December 10) with crews from Cheadle, Ipstones, Leek and Longton all attending the scene.

Tributes have been paid to a well-known pub landlady in the Moorlands. Dorothy Ada Goldstraw, passed away peacefully on June 10 at her home in Alton, aged 85 years.

Police are appealing for witnesses after 20 lambs have been stolen from a farm in the Moorlands. The incident happened at a farm near Alton earlier this month.

Police are warning people across the Moorlands and East Staffordshire to ensure their properties are secure after four burglaries where people have entered via an unlocked door occurred in a matter of hours. The incidents, in Coppenhall and Bradley, both near Stafford, Codsall, and Kingsley Holt, near Cheadle, all happened yesterday on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 18.

A Moorlands grandmother is making an appeal for help to purchase her autistic grandson a wooden outside playhouse. Cheryl Smith, a nurse who lives in Alton, is appealing for donations so her family can purchase her grandson, seven-year-old Amir, a suitable outdoor sensory room that will allow him to have a safe space.

A legendary tree in the Moorlands has been nominated for a national recognition. The Chained Oak, which is situated in Alton, has been put forward for the Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year 2020 title.

Tributes have been paid to a well-respected community leader who served his area for more than 40 years. Arthur Forrester, aged 88 of Alton, died last Tuesday (August 25) just weeks after he and his wife Beryl celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on August 6.

A village hairdressers has pulled out all the stops to be able to offer their services to customers once again. Alike to so many hair salons across the country, The Old Stables Hairdressing Salon in Alton re-opened its doors to clients on Saturday (July 4). However, the team at the family run business have gone above and beyond by, not only re-opening their actual salon, but also setting up a temporary outdoor salon for people who may not feel comfortable about going into the indoor salon – with the current coronavirus situation.
