Support service could lose funding

A community support service that is greatly relied upon by many in the area has told the Times & Echo it again faces uncertainty and could lose tens of thousands in funding from the North Staffordshire & Stoke on Trent Clinical Commissioning Group next year.

Moorlands Home Link helps more than 200 elderly people a week through various support services which includes a day centre in Cheadle and Meals on Wheels, as well as a Befriending and Phone Link Service.

Like many charities and businesses, the charity took a huge hit amid the Covid-19 pandemic and saw a drop in finances and donations.

“We lost £15,000 of income each month when we had to close our doors to face-to-face services,” executive manager Sharon Ball told the Times & Echo.

“When we locked down in March 2020, we really didn’t know if we’d survive those first few weeks.

“So to still be working and thriving as a not-for-profit charity 18 months later is an immense source of pride for us all at Moorlands Home Link.”

The service re-opened its day centre again in October 2020 with social distancing and control measures in place.

In partnership with Support Staffordshire, Staffordshire County Council and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Moorlands Home Link was one of three hubs in the Moorlands that the most clinically vulnerable were directed to for support throughout the pandemic.

But from April 2022, the start of the next financial year, national changes in the way that Clinical Commissioning Groups work and the way services are commissioned means Moorlands Home Link could lose the only statutory funding they currently receive.

Sharon added: “If the North Staffordshire & Stoke on Trent Clinical Commissioning Group do withdraw the statutory funding, we will lose £70,000 a year.

“Our charity must then find further alternative income streams or apply for available grants to secure our future.”

Moorlands Home Link, which has now been running for 35 years, receives donations from a number of fundraisers throughout the year, such as Melissa Corkery who raised more than £1,500 when she ran the London Marathon in October.

Sharon highlighted and thanked those like Melissa who dig deep to fundraise and help the service keep on running.

She said: “We would not be able to do what we do without the kindness and the continued generous support of the local community.

“Every bit of support helps us to continue our work supporting the elderly and vulnerable of Cheadle and the surrounding area as we face the future.

“We remain as determined as ever to make a difference to the lives of older people and their families when they need help.”

Those who would like to donate to the charity can do so via the Moorlands Home Link Facebook page or by supporting a number of events that are taking place soon.

These include ‘A Service of Nine Lessons and Carols’ by Moorland Voices at St Giles the Abbot on Sunday, December 19.

Donations can also be handed in at 17 Charles Street, Cheadle.

The Times & Echo have approached the North Staffordshire & Stoke on Trent Clinical Commissioning Group for comment on numerous occasions but is yet to receive a formal response.
