POLICE and the fire service are calling for motorists to obey speed limits and behave ‘sensibly’ as lock down restrictions ease. The force warned drivers to obey speed limits as officers clocked a Porsche being driven at 114mph on the A50 near Uttoxeter over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Staffordshire Police’s ‘Operation Lightning’ saw officers team up with the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership for a weekend of speed enforcement. Staffordshire’s Road Policing Unit shared images and information about the operation on Twitter.
An officer said: “Just intercepted this Porsche 911 travelling at 114mph along the A50, Uttoxeter. “Driver will be reported to court.”
Patrols also took place on the A518 between Weston and Uttoxeter. Officers said: “Just our marked visible presences is clearly having an impact – the sounds of ‘revving engines’ clearly reduces as they get closer and see us.”
Officers on motorcycles patrolled A50 Uttoxeter, A518 Chartley, A53 Leek, A51 Woseley Bridges, A5 Wall, A449 Stourton, A51 Weston as part of the Bank Holiday weekend patrol.
A spokesman for the force said on Twitter: “On average, three people die each day on country roads. Always drive to the conditions of the road, and remember, the limit is not a target. You don’t know what is round the bend. We will stop motorists where safe aiming to educate and enforce if necessary. Slow down, save a life.”
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also took to social media to ask drivers to act ‘sensibly’ after parked cars blocked a country road. The narrow lane to a rural beauty spot near Uttoxeter had several cars parked along the verge, which prevented fire crews from getting through.
