Sign swap at Master Potter

By timesecholife on in All News, Community News

A LETTER published in the Times and Echo has prompted a Cheadle pub to swap its sign. A cartoon-like sheep on the sign of the Master Potter pub in Tean Road prompted an angry letter from Cheadle resident Judith Carr-Cave. And when the letter was brought to the attention of brewer and pub company Greene King, the firm decided to take action.

Judith labelled the sign “discourteous” and a “gross insult” to the skilled workers of the Potteries.

Hungry Horse’s business unit director Andy Wilson said: “Our pubs are at the hearts of their communities and we take the feedback of our friends and customers in those communities extremely seriously.”

The sheep potter has now been replaced with a portrait of the iconic Josiah Wedgwood and staff toasted the new sign as it was installed last week.

Andy added: “The last thing we would have wanted to do was create a sign that didn’t reflect the proud traditions of the Potteries and we hope that the new sign showing the original master potter is more in line with the pub and its community.

“We always look for our pub signs to reflect their communities but occasionally mistakes do happen and we are more than happy to rectify matters when they do.”

The pub underwent a major six-figure refurbishment in 2017 and recently the pub’s sign was also updated as part of Hungry Horse’s continual investment programme in its pubs.
