A community group in the Moorlands has launched a share initiative in their bid to purchase a former chapel building.

The ‘Kingsley Holt Centre’ group is aiming to purchase the Methodist Chapel in Kingsley Holt, which the Staffordshire Moorlands Methodist Circuit had previously announced that it is putting the building up for sale.

In 2021, the Kingsley Holt Centre group made a successful bid to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for the building to be registered as an Asset of Community Value.

The Kingsley Holt Centre Project is now aiming to raise around £250,000 to purchase and refurbish the former chapel, to provide a welcoming space for groups, clubs, activities, events and hopefully a community shop and café.

They have set up a Community Benefit Society which will run The Kingsley Holt Centre for the benefit of the residents of Kingsley Holt and the surrounding area.

The Kingsley Holt Centre group launched their share offer initiative yesterday (Wednesday, March 23), as part of their bid to raise the cash to purchase the building.

A spokesman for the group said: “Shares in the Community Benefit Society are available until April 22.

The society hopes to raise between £100,000 and £170,000 towards the project to reopen the chapel building in Kingsley Holt as a venue for continued community use to include a community shop and café.

The share offer has Community Share Standard Mark and is among the first in the Moorlands to achieve this.”

The official launch evening is being held this evening (Thursday, March 24) at Thornbury Hall in Kingsley Holt at 8pm.

Copies of the Share Offer document will be available on the night and are also available to download together with the full Business Plan from the group’s website at www.kingsleyholtcentre.co.uk.

The spokesman said: “This is an opportunity to invest in a local community project an exciting and valuable project, reopening this venue for continued community use is vitally important to our community.

We would ask anyone interested in investing and or helping to please attend the lunch night or come to one of our drop-in venues over the next few weeks.”

These are scheduled for: Monday, March 28 at Blacksmiths Arms from 6pm until 8pm; Sunday, April 3 at the Recreation Ground, Kingsley Holt, 2pm-4pm; Wednesday, April 6 at The Blacksmiths Arms, 6pm-8pm; Saturday, April 9 at 16 Sidney Drive, Kingsley Holt, 2pm-4pm; and on Wednesday, April 20 at The Blacksmiths Arms, 6pm-8pm.
