A Moorlands woman is warning residents of telephone scam calls.
Joan Brindley, who lives in Forsbrook, has contacted the Times & Echo after receiving, what she believes to have been, a scam telephone call.
Mrs Brindley said: “I had a call from a chap who said his name was Tony and that he was from BT headquarters in Milton Keynes.
“He told me that they had sent me a letter a month ago about me owing £7.45.
“I asked what it was for, to which he said that I had called a special number, which he read out to me as 0871 9848485.
“He also gave me the number of 0800 800150 which he said he was calling from.
“He kept on about the £7.45 which I owe. I said that I pay my phone bill by direct debit.
“He then went on to say that I had made a special phone call which will not be included on my normal bill and that if I did not pay it then my phone would be cut off.
“I told him to cut me off then and put the phone down on him.
“He then called again, to which I said I will not be paying him anything and I hung up again.”
Mrs Brindley went on to say that her telephone is her lifeline, especially during the pandemic.
She said: “I know it was only £7.45 but that would have been just the beginning as he would have had my bank details if I had paid it then.
“It is worrying as he knew my name and where I lived. I do wonder where these scammers get their information from?
“I’ve had a couple of other scam calls, one regarding Amazon and another about my computer, which I do not own.
“I just want to raise awareness about these scams. It’s worrying and we get enough rubbish through the door with our names on, which we do not ask for.”
