A parish in the Moorlands joined the nation in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee earlier this month – and also renamed a public open space as part of the occasion. The celebratory weekend in Checkley parish began with a floral display in Christ Church which was open to the public for three days; while there was entertainment from the Tean Community Singers at Tean Park on the Thursday between 9pm and 10pm as well as the Lighting of the Beacon at Tean Park and Raddle Hollington at 9.45pm.

On the Friday, there was a disco night at Tean Youth Club at 7pm; and a Fireworks and Laser Show at Raddle Hollington with the fireworks starting at 10pm.

On the Saturday, cream teas were served at Great Wood Hall where visitors were able to take away their very own VE Day mug.

On the Sunday, there was a Picnic in the Park in Tean with a multitude of activities from stalls, fish and chips, ice creams, face painting, balloon modelling and much more.

The programme of entertainment included: Park renaming plaque reveal; Churches Together Service; Teanukulele; School Choirs; Guides, Brownies and Rainbows; Tune Up Choir; Tean Community Singers; M&M; Outlaws; and a disco.

Afternoon Tea was also served at Hollington Village Hall.

Member of the Checkley Parish Community Events Committee and Checkley Parish Council, Stephanie Akerman, said: “During the cream tea and picnic in the park celebrations we finally had the opportunity to give out the Parish VE day mugs. Unfortunately our events that we had planned for the VE day celebrations had to be cancelled due to Covid.

“What an absolutely incredible week we had. Huge thank you to everyone who volunteered and to those who were able to attend, we could not hold these events without you.

“Thank you to Morrisons Cheadle, Tean Co-op, Greatwood School, Greatwood Hall, The Raddle, Tean Fish Bar, White Hart and M&M signs and graphics for the amazing donations, items borrowed for the events and use of facilities.”

Stephanie further explained about the park renaming plaque reveal. She said: “The park plaque has been designed as part of a collaboration project with myself, Checkley Parish Community Events Committee, Checkley Parish Council, Greatwood School, St Thomas’s School, Hutchinson Memorial School, St Thomas’s Day Nursery, Acorns Day Nursery, Guides, Brownies, Rainbows, Tean Youth Club and Gaming Potion.

Each group or as a team designed/drew a picture which have then been combined to produce a beautiful community park plaque which was unveiled at Tean Park on Sunday, June 5.”

She added: “The printing of the plaque is very kindly being sponsored and printed by M&M signs and graphics based in Longton, the amazing company have then worked with year six Greatwood School children in drawing the company logo to continue with the theme of the new plaque.”
