Adam Peaty to receive the OBE following success at Tokyo Olympics.
OLYMPIC champion Adam Peaty is among Staffordshire residents recognised in the New Year Honours.
Uttoxeter’s swimming superstar, Adam has been awarded the OBE following his Gold medal achievements at the Tokyo Olympics.
The medal is a promotion to the MBE he received after his success at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
The honour comes at the end of a stellar year for Adam, who added to his Olympic medal haul over the summer, before taking a break from swimming to compete in Strictly Come Dancing.
He has also released his first book The Gladiator Mindset and came third in the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year as well as celebrating the first birthday of his son George-Anderson, with partner Eiri Munro.
On Twitter, Adam said: “2021 I didn’t like you too much but you’ve made me stronger, wiser and definitely more grateful for life going into 2022.
“So honoured to be awarded an OBE for my services to swimming in the New Years’ Honours list! A lot changes in a year but I feel like something big is coming.”
Honours recipients will be invited to receive their medals from a member of the Royal family at a special ceremony later in the year.
Adam is joined by members of the health and nursing professions, and for workers in social care and economic regeneration in Staffordshire, including people who played key roles in the county’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Alan White, Leader of Staffordshire County Council, said: “These awards capture the best of Staffordshire, ranging from those who set international and national standards of sporting and professional excellence, to those who make a real difference to their communities and the people who live there.
“This county’s greatest asset is its people and, in passing on my congratulations to them all for their achievements, I am proud to be associated with them and with Staffordshire.”
Mr Ian Dudson CBE, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, said: “People from all walks of life are brought together to be honoured by Her Majesty the Queen on behalf of us all for their example, effort and contribution to our society.
“We congratulate all those from Staffordshire who have been recognised in this way and share their pride at this special moment.”
Uttoxeter Town Mayor, Cllr Chris Sylvester said: “The whole town sends their congratulations to Adam Peaty on being awarded the OBE in The Queen’s New Year Honours List, this follows the MBE awarded in 2017. The award is richly deserved following the fantastic 2021 Adam has had.”
