A town council has agreed not to purchase any bunting for its town centre after the proposal was put forward by one of its members.

Cheadle town councillor Jamie Evans put forward the idea of decorating the Moorlands town’s High Street at the recent virtual meeting of Cheadle Town Council.

He said: “The request has come in from a few places in the town to see if we can have some bunting up before the Christmas lights.

I know there is a budget, and with all the hard work by Cheadle in Bloom with the floral displays, it would look good too.”

The idea came up against opposition from some councillors with regards to the expenditure, and others put forward ideas of having flag poles around the high street instead.

The proposal was put to a vote with four councillors for the purchase of bunting, while 12 voted against resulting in the motion being thrown out.

  • Well what a surprise The bunting was such a good idea..when ever the town has been decorated it gives a good vibe and the impression of a town that cares and is a welcoming place But hey ho we are of course the poor relations of “ other Moorland” towns..so we will stay trod under .. council that doesn’t care

  • The last time we had bunting and people had also knitted and wrapped areas of the high street it looked brilliant. Budget is obviously a difficult balancing act but it would be cheering and welcoming to see the town look colourful and alive.
