A FORMER care home site in Cheadle, which has been empty for around 10 years, is finally set to be redeveloped into housing. Your Housing Group is aiming to develop the former Lightwood Care Home site in Well Street into 21 homes. In their report to SMDC's Community Overview and Scrutiny Panel, Your Housing Group's Property Manager Sharon Wheeler, said: “The development team are currently looking at developing two sites in the Staffordshire Moorlands area.
“Firstly, we are looking at developing 21 units in Cheadle, for shared ownership and affordable rent. The site is currently owned by Ascent and we are exploring ways of how the site can be built out.
“Based on current progress and if we can agree a cost with the principal contractor, which meets all our financial parameters, we could be on site in quarter one of 2019/20.”
Lorraine Donnelly, development director for Your Housing Group, has further confirmed to the Times & Echo that the site referred to is indeed of the former Lightwood Care Home in Cheadle.
She said: “It is Your Housing Group’s intention to work collaboratively with the local authority to build 21 homes on this site.
“We hope to submit a planning application later this year.”
Planning permission has previously, in 2014, been approved for the site for the “construction of 17 new houses on the site of a former care home and including demolition of the care home building.”
Cheadle councillor Ron Locker has welcomed the news that the former care home site is to be finally developed.
He said: “This is long overdue as it must be coming up to over ten years that the care home was closed.
“We just seemed to have been paddling along listening to stories that the site is to be developed.
“Such a development is needed on that site as it has been left in a terrible site for a long time.”
Mr Locker added: “I will be pleased when the development on the site actually happens.”
The other site which Your Housing Group is looking at developing into housing within the Staffordshire Moorlands is in Leek.
