New defib for Grindley villagers

By timesecholife on in Community News, Uttoxeter news

NEW life-saving equipment has been installed in Grindley. Villagers and businesses worked together to fund the 24-hour defibrillator, which was provided by charity AEDdonate last month. Volunteers reached their £1,999 target, despite their main fund-raiser being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

The 24-hour emergency defib has been installed at Village Chiropractic Clinic. Jennifer and David Hudson spearheaded the drive for the unit. Jennifer said: “Our main fundraising event – a charity auction was cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic – however the local community and businesses all came together and supported us to reach our target of £1,999. The device has 24-hour emergency access, is located on the outside of the building and is a vital resource to the local area.”

Each year 100,000 people die from a sudden cardiac arrest, of these 620 are under the age of 35. If defibrillation takes place within the first three minutes the patient’s chances of survival increase by more than 80 per cent. Defib units are potentially life-saving kit paid for by communities as there is currently no Government funding for the equipment.

Jennifer added: “Having the defibrillator installed means that it can be deployed by the local ambulance trust in a bid to give the patient the all-important shock to the heart prior to the ambulance arrival. The defibrillator is by no means a replacement to the ambulance service, it just allows patient treatment to commence immediately. We are so grateful to everyone who has supported us in so many ways, thank you.”
