A town council is to look further into the cost of broadcasting meetings online.

The move by Leek Town Council comes after Leek resident Ann Sharratt suggested that the council broadcast their meetings online as it would, she said, make the council meetings “more accessible.”

Ann, who attends Leek Town Council meetings to listen to proceedings from the public gallery, made the suggestion at last week’s Leek Town Council meeting on Tuesday (May 17).

She told councillors that having the meetings broadcast online would bring: “an opportunity for true community engagement.”

After Ann’s presentation, there was a debate amongst councillors about the apparent cost to initially set up, and continue thereafter, broadcasting meetings which apparently, according to a quote they have gained from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC), is a one-off set up fee of £6,625, and then it would cost the council £46.40 per broadcast.

This cost is despite that the equipment for such broadcasting is already set up and running, and used by SMDC, in the Council Chambers at Moorlands House, where Leek Town Council also holds its meetings.

Councillors then heard from a member of the public gallery, Paul Chauveau, that the set-up fee could be done for a lot cheaper.

It was agreed to look into the matter further and that it would be an agenda item for the next General Purposes meeting of the town council.

The Leek & Moorlands Echo contacted SMDC for clarification on the cost Leek Town Council had been quoted, and also for a break-down of the costs, to which a spokesperson for SMDC said: “We have sought quotes from the external company that provides the webcasting services at the request of the Town Council and confirmed that these are the costs as quoted by that company.”
