A town council incurred a loss of more than £3,500 after they had to cancel a large scale community event due to bad weather recently.

Leek Town Council had set to help the town celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with an event coinciding with their annual Party in the Park on Sunday, June 5.

However, following great downpours of rain overnight and more forecast for during the event, the council’s Events Committee took the decision to cancel the community extravaganza due to health and safety concerns.

Councillors heard, at their meeting last Tuesday (July 26), that the costs incurred from the event totalled £3,616.50.

The costs included:

Identity Print for posters and leaflets: £118. AMDC administration: £85. Stu’s Loos: £360. Gator Medical: £395. XS Events Wateslide: £600 + £1,485. Travis Perkins: £43.95 + £269.78. Aquam water pipe hire: £259.77.

Councillors were also informed that the marquee hire company, which had turned up to erect the marquee on the day, did not charge anything.

Councillors agreed that it was “a shame” that the council had to cancel the event and about the costs they had incurred but that it had been the right decision to cancel the event for the safety of the public who would have attended.

  • Congratulations to Leek Town Council in ensuring the safety of the public is their top priority. It's good to know we can rely on the TC to take their responsibilities seriously. After all the planning and so forth that they had put into this event, it must have been huge for them to have to disappoint the public. Ann Sharratt.
