School children in a Moorlands village have been learning some life-saving skills.
The first aid training has been taking place at St Werburgh’s CE Primary School in Kingsley.
A spokesman for the school said: “Years Three to Six at St Werburgh’s, which is part of The Moorlands Primary Federation, a locally-based Multi Academy Trust, completed the ‘Mini Medics’ training and developed their understanding of ways in which they can help someone who is unconscious.
“Led by local First Aid expert, Nina Arnott, the lessons introduced children to the contents of a first aid kit, techniques for putting people in the recovery position, and to also deliver CPR – and the importance of each of these.
“Children were also taught about what they need to do if they have to call an ambulance.”
Speaking of the training, Archie, aged nine, said, “I really enjoyed using ‘DR ABC’ (one of the techniques taught) and it helped me remember what to do in an emergency situation.”
Eight-year-old Zara said, “Learning how to perform the recovery position was my favourite part and it is a really useful thing to know how to do.”
School Leader, Alex Brayford, added: “We are delighted to complement our curriculum by offering the children vitally important lessons to help to save a life.
“We thank Mrs Arnott for teaching the children the most important steps which they can take to keep alive someone who is very poorly until help arrives.
“Of course, we hope that they will never need to do this, but to know how, and to understand the difference which it can make, is brilliant.
“We are very proud of the children for how hard they worked to learn these skills.”
