A Girlguide and Ranger leader from the Moorlands is taking on a half marathon challenge to raise money for two girls heading off to Iceland in 2023.
Jane McFarlane, aged 46 from Kingsley, has decided to run the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon on September 18 to help Sam and Poppy with their fundraising for the Girlguiding Staffordshire trip next year.
Sam is a Ranger and Poppy attends Cheadle Guides, and both passed a rigorous selection process to be chosen to represent the county on the trip.
Mum-of-one Jane said: “Back in 2011, I was fortunate enough to lead a county trip to Switzerland and I saw what a life-changing experience it can be.
“The girls have to raise £2,000 each to go, so not only have they had to pass a selection process, they now have to work hard at fund-raising – it really is a year-long challenge for them, culminating in the trip.”
Jane’s target is £500, which will be split between Sam and Poppy.
She added: “I only started running last August, as a way to keep fit. I started with Couch to 5k and have since joined Newcastle (Staffs) AC to try to push myself further.
“I really want to complete the half marathon in under two-and-a-half hours. I chose Lake Vyrnwy because it’s where I was born and it’s very scenic – which might take my mind off the 13.1 miles I have to run.
“I’d be so grateful if anyone can help with sponsorship. Every penny counts and the girls I took to Switzerland all those years ago still remember the fantastic experience they had and the friendships they made. We’re all still in touch.
“It’s a huge honour to be selected and I want to do everything I can to support Sam and Poppy in their fundraising.”
