Moorlands charity on the lookout for volunteers

A MOORLANDS charity is on the look out for new volunteer minibus drivers.
Support Staffordshire’s Community Transport Scheme operate the minibuses in order to bring fun, company and adventure for the hundreds of people who use the company for regular trips or special days out.
In the past year, the three minibuses currently in use made nearly 300 journeys, equating to over 4,400 single passenger journeys.
Many of the trips include taking elderly people to social activities and events such as luncheon clubs, but others include one-off trips, such as taking young people to a special event.
Keith Hambleton, a volunteer minibus driver for over eight years, said: “I really enjoy driving the minibuses for Support Staffordshire.
“There is no pressure on the volunteers and they have a great team already, but a few more drivers would enable even more journeys to take place.
“I feel it is important that people are able to get out and about and so I take great pride in helping to reduce social isolation by driving the minibuses.”
The company insist that no experience of driving a larger vehicle is needed, as all necessary training will be given.
The buses are operated under a Section 19 Permit, meaning that no PSV licence is required, however factors such as age and licence type will cause some restrictions.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver should contact Sally Bentley, voluntary and community transport officer for Support Staffordshire on 01538 381356 or email sally.bentley@supportstaffordshire.org.uk.
