A GROUP of residents who help keep their town clean by picking up litter are scheduled to re-start it’s monthly meets again soon. The Cheadle Moorlands Litter Pickers is set to meet on Sunday (February 2) at 10am for the first time this year after taking a short break over winter and the group of volunteers is inviting residents down to assist in the deed. The initiative started in August 2018 with still current members meeting on the first Sunday of every month outside Bargain Booze, located on High Street, before travelling around town to pick up items of waste left in public spaces.
Nicola Cooper, who established the group with mum Christine Broad, said partakers will be provided with bags and littler pickers and asks, if possible, that residents take their own gloves due to low stock.
“We want to keep the town looking tidy,” Nicola told the Times and Echo.
“Numbers went up last year before they dropped slightly because of the cold.
“However, we usually have a lot of people when it gets a bit warmer and get towards summer.
“The more we have the better.”
A spokesperson for the group wrote on it’s Facebook page: “We welcome anyone who wishes to join us in our mission.
“While de-littering Cheadle collectively we need to consider the effects of litter pollution on the town and rural environment.
“Those who drop litter in Cheadle or who throw it from their cars in the town or in surrounding countryside are the problem but collectively and with a conscience, we are the solution.
“It is now time for all of us to go out of our way to pick up trash littering the town of Cheadle.
“We must all work towards making Cheadle and the local countryside a cleaner, tidier and litter free place.”
