FAMILIES CALL FOR BIG SWITCH-ON TO BE GIVEN A FACELIFT

ORGANISERS of Uttoxeter’s annual Christmas lights switch-on have welcomed ideas to improve the event next year.
A visit by Santa Claus and his reindeer – complete with a sudden ‘snow’ fall – were hailed as a huge success for the town, which lit up for the festive season on Friday.
But some residents were left disappointed and have suggested the switch-on could be combined with another seasonal celebration, such as the Christmas Cracker event, to provide entertainment for all the family.
Uttoxeter mum Liana Watt said she felt let down by the event.
She said: “I took my two children down with high expectations, only to find the leftovers of what was the switch-on and stallholders packing up.
“To say I was disappointed is not a strong enough statement.
“After seeing posters and banners saying 4.30pm to 8pm, I felt it better to feed the kids first and arrive there for a comfortable 6-ish.
“I was worried the car park would be packed and the first flag was raised by how many spaces there were.
“Upon entering the High Street we were greeted by five or six stalls of tombola and that was it. Most of the people had gone.
“I thought I would air my thoughts on it on Facebook. Many other people agreed and also had great ideas on improving this event.
