A 58-YEAR-OLD from East Staffordshire made it to the semi-finals of a national weight-loss competition after losing 12 stone and 13 pounds. Steven Knight, from Abbots Bromley, reached the semi-finals of Slimming World's 'Man of the Year 2019' after slashing his weight from 26 stone and nine pounds to 13 stone and ten pounds. Steven, who attends Slimming World classes in Uttoxeter, said: “I was encouraged to join Slimming World by my two daughters Lynne and Sally.
“I’m so glad I took that step to find my Slimming World group.
“Initially I thought I would struggle to attend because I’m a shift worker but I am able to go along to any of my local groups so I’m lucky enough to have had support from three encouraging consultants Dolly, Steph and Gemma.
“Joining Slimming World was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
At the semi-finals event, Steven met former England and Liverpool footballer Emile Heskey.
The ex-striker said: “As a footballer, being fit and active has always been at the forefront of my mind and I know how much effort and dedication it can take to stay healthy – both mentally and physically.
“It was a pleasure to meet Steven and hear about his transformation – it’s hard to believe that he ever had a problem with his weight.
“I think it can be hard for men to admit they have a problem with something and then seek the help they need to fix it.
“It’s not an easy thing to do, so hats off to Steven because he has a healthy life ahead of him now.”
Uttoxeter’s Slimming World group organiser, Dolly Lowndes, said: “A lot of people think that slimming clubs are female-only zones, but that’s not the case at all and Steven is proof of that.
“There are now 60,000 men attending Slimming World groups, and we understand that men need just as much support as women to slim down and improve their health.
“Absolutely everyone is welcome at Slimming World and I hope Steven inspires lots of other people in Abbots Bromley – male or female – who’d like to lose weight to take that step and join our group at Wilfred House.”
Slimming World’s recent ‘Machobesity Report’ revealed that while 95 per cent of men want to lose weight, mainly for health reasons, men “typically keep weight worries to themselves for more than six years on average.”
The report writer also added: “Once they set their mind to it though, men do seem to be good at slimming down.
“On average men lose an impressive 5.7 per cent of their body weight in three months at Slimming World, while women lose 4.3 per cent.”
