A JCB employee had to step into the role of midwife when his partner gave birth to their first baby – in a hospital lift. Sam Gavin, 32, rushed his partner Jenna Foster, 33, to Royal Stoke Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, January 8, as she was in the advanced stages of labour. But as the couple took an elevator to the maternity ward, their first baby, a little girl, made her appearance a little early.
Sam, who is originally from Cheadle, said: “It was amazing, but really traumatic because I didn’t know what to do.
“I felt really helpless and I just kept shouting for help because I was afraid for the health of the baby and Jenna.
“Thankfully loads of midwives were on the scene really quickly and mum and baby are doing brilliantly.”
The couple later chose a name for their little bundle of joy which reflected her dramatic arrival.
Sam said: “We were convinced we would have a boy and only had a boy’s name, so we decided to call her Ella-Rae – Ella because she was born in an elevator and Rae after my grandad.”
“This is our first child and family life is amazing, I never imagined we could feel so much love for her.”
The couple, who live in Fenton, have already taken Ella-Rae to visit their colleagues, taking a trip to Newcastle Dental Practice, where Jenna is a dental hygiene therapist and JCB World Headquarters where Sam is a construction product specialist.
Sam added: “People have been so kind and generous – we’ve had flowers and cards from JCB and Newcastle Dental Practice and gifts from as far afield as Australia.
“I’ve already had to go out and buy another wardrobe for all her clothes.”
