A family from the Moorlands have shared their Covid-19 ordeal – and thanked the community that helped them through it.

Trudi Beswick and her daughter Tizane, from Foxt, both needed emergency care from paramedics and hospital treatment after contracting the virus.

Friends, neighbours, teachers, councillors and local shopkeepers all played a part of helping the family as they remained in isolation.

Tizane, aged 10, is a pupil at Faber School in Cotton and was asked to isolate after a classmate tested positive for coronavirus.

Within days, Tiz’s best friend and then Tiz herself tested positive, with Tiz’s mum, Trudi also contracting the illness.

After initialling experiencing mild symptoms, Tiz became seriously unwell, with recurring breathing difficulties requiring emergency hospital treatment – and while she is on the mend, Tiz is still having some respiratory problems.

After several trips to hospital by ambulance, Tiz was taken seriously ill with a suspected cardiac arrest. Two paramedic teams arrived at the house, and after administering adrenaline and steroids she was rushed to hospital accompanied by her dad, Paul.

It wasn’t until the next day, when Paul attempted to contact his wife with an update on their daughter that he learned she too had been rushed to A&E with heart problems, which later turned out to be related to Covid-19.

Paul, said: “I was on the ward with Tiz and Trudi was in A&E – our son, Elijah, is 15 and had to stay home on his own.

Fortunately Tiz and Trudi were treated and ready to go home at the same time, but as we’d all arrived in ambulances and we couldn’t ask anyone to pick us up, the hospital arranged transport home for us as well.

My wife is now at home but unwell and we’ve had another appointment at hospital with Tizane this week as she’s still suffering breathing problems, but they say she seems to be improving.

The NHS have been amazing – you have a child with breathing issues and they are there within 15 minutes, even though we live in the middle of nowhere really. We’ve been to hospital four times and had paramedics out six times to look at Tiz. I can’t thank them enough.”

While the family were isolating, Ipstones Parish Council member, Linda Malyon volunteered to drop off a food parcel they had ordered at the Londis Trading Post in Ipstones, while friends and neighbours have been on hand to support them too.

Paul added: “We just want to say a massive thank you to all of the people who have stepped up and supported us.

It’s been really nice – one of the neighbours came round and asked if we wanted anything. It’s like the Dunkirk spirit. In terms of what you see on the news you think it’s all awful and then people who step in to help are right outside your front door.

And the teachers at both Faber and Painsley have been ringing regularly to check in on her. It’s been lovely to have the school community taking an interest and looking out for her.

It does inspire you a bit that not everything is bad.”

Paul is also urging people to ensure they abide by government advice and restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus.

He said: “For the people who say it’s just the flu – this is not the flu. They obviously haven’t been touched by it. If they had a 10 year old child who was seriously ill, they wouldn’t be going round with no masks on.

She’s 10 years old and she does 20 hours training a week as an elite gymnast. She has been knocked off her feet.”
