A YOUNG musician and a standard bearer from the Royal British Legion conducted an impromptu Act of Remembrance to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Staffordshire County Council member, David Brookes, praised the pair after he spotted them at Uttoxeter’s War Memorial on Friday.
Several people in the town centre stopped to observe the two minute silence at 11am on Friday, May 8. Cllr Brookes said: “I think it’s great that the young lady – I believe she is a member of the town band – felt it appropriate to turn up and play the Last Post at the War Memorial. It was a fantastic coincidence that the standard bearer from the Royal British Legion also came to pay his respects.
“People who were in the town stopped to give thanks for those who paid the ultimate price in World War II to defend the freedoms that we all enjoy today. Everyone was very careful to observe the social distancing rules. When she played the Last Post it brought a tear to my eye – she played it beautifully.”
Cllr Brookes managed to record the special moment on video, which he later shared on social media. He added: “It was just a shame that some motorists were oblivious to the fact that this was meant to be a silence to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.”
Cllr Brookes has recently allocated cash to businesses and organisations as part of a special Covid-19 fund. He has split £2,500 between the Burton Albion trust which has been active in and around Uttoxeter along with the town’s United Reform Church and Old Sadler’s Yard, which have been providing meals for people in need.
