When Laura Parkin and her friend Gemma Ash decided to get fit after a summer of lockdown they had no idea their efforts would end up raising hundreds of pounds for the local preschool.

The pair had decided to complete the Couch to 5k programme and were a couple of weeks into the challenge when Laura attended a committee meeting of the Kingsley Kingfishers and Kingfishers of Dilhorne in her capacity as secretary.

This year has been really tough for everybody, and Kingfishers is no exception,” she said. “We were chatting about what we could do to fundraise since many of our regular events have had to be cancelled and I just heard myself say, “I could do a sponsored 5k.”

Laura volunteered Gemma to do the run with her and their training ramped up.

There were days when we were out running in the cold and wet and we really were wondering why we’d ever signed up to do this,” laughed Laura. “But we set ourselves a fundraising target of £250 and were determined to see it through.”

Fitting running in around work and their children, the two kept up the training, setting a date of November 29 to do the run.

Accompanied by their families, the two turned up to JCB lake at Rocester on the cold and misty Sunday morning ready for the challenge.

We were nervous,” admitted Laura. “It was all very real – but we did it.”

The pair even surpassed their original fundraising goal, more than doubling it to £520.

We were so chuffed. A few months ago I couldn’t run down the road and I managed to do a 5k,” said Laura. “Next stop a 10k… or maybe not.”

Committee chairman Jane McFarlane thanked the pair for their efforts.

Wow, what an amazing total,” she said. “I can’t thank Laura and Gemma enough for all their hard work, running in all weathers to help us.

That money will be used for resources for the lovely children at our two settings and we all the staff and committee are very grateful.”
