A fundraising organisation in the Moorlands has hosted a duck race this month.

The Lions Club of Cheadle hosted the ‘quacky’ event on Bank Holiday Monday (May 2).

Starting at 1pm, there was a total of 800 yellow ducks ‘swimming’ their way along the River Tean at Tean Recreation Ground.

Lions member Tony Gadsby said: “On a dry Bank Holiday afternoon with a fast flowing river, 800 yellow ducks were released into the River Tean by Cheadle Lions as they ran their annual fundraising Duck Race.

After a competitive race with the lead duck changing several times, all ducks safely reached the finishing line.”

The main results were: First Place to Duck number 336, won by Pat Howells; Second to No 53 Heather Bates; and Third to No 737 Ainhoa.

The last Duck home was number 650 Will Robinson.

A full list of winners has been posted on Cheadle Lions Facebook Page.

Tony added: “Cheadle Lions would like to thank all those who attended the race together with everyone who sponsored a duck or sold tickets.

Thanks also go Alton Towers for generously sponsoring the First Prize with a Spa Day, to St Peter’s C of E Primary School PTA at Hixon, who kindly loaned the ducks for the event and to members of Uttoxeter Lions who helped marshal the ducks.

Thanks to the generosity of all those who bought tickets to sponsor a duck a total of £675 was raised which will be used to support the Clubs charitable work.”

Cheadle Lions meet on the first Wednesday of every month at Hales Hall in Cheadle at 7.30pm and are always looking to new members who would like to help their community.

Anyone interested in joining can call Tony Gadsby on 0345 833 4991, or find ‘Cheadle (Staffs) Lions Club’ on Facebook.
