LONDON TO PARIS IN JUST FOUR DAYS
A COMMUNITY fund-raiser who works in Cheadle is preparing to cycle from London to Paris in just four days.
Anne-Marie Jones heads to London on Thursday when she’ll join more than 300 other cyclists from all over the country at the start of the Pedal to Paris ride.
The 52-year-old will represent the Royal British Legion in the gruelling challenge which raises money for the British Armed Forces community.
She’ll cycle 300 miles through London, Kent and Northern France before finishing the event in Paris on Sunday, September 3 where a service of Remembrance will be held at the Arc de Triomphe.
Anne-Marie, who organises fund-raising events in Cheadle and Uttoxeter and co-ordinates the annual poppy appeal in the area, served in the RAF for 18 years.
She first completed the Pedal to Paris event in 2014 in memory of her father who fought with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in World War Two.
She said: “The ride is one of the hardest things I have ever done, but it’s a wonderful experience and very emotional, especially when you get towards the Arc de Triomphe – I just always think about my Dad willing me on.
“Through some research I managed to obtain the names of 24 people in my Dad’s company who died so I carry poppies for each of these men with me on the ride.
“My plan is eventually to go to the Reichswald military cemetery in Germany to put a poppy on each of their graves.”
Anne-Marie is hoping to raise at least £900 for the Legion – the nation’s biggest Armed Forces charity.
Claire Rowcliffe, director of fund-raising at the Royal British Legion, said: “We’re very grateful to Anne-Marie for taking on the Pedal to Paris challenge.
“It’s an incredible experience and we wish her all the best for the ride.”
