Visitors to a Moorlands town centre are set to benefit from free parking this weekend. Those visiting Cheadle on Saturday (April 24) will be able to make the most of three hours free parking thanks to Cheadle Town Council which has organised the initiative with Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC), the council which has remit over most of the town’s car parks.
UPDATE: Deputy Mayor of Cheadle, councillor Gary Bentley has now confirmed that the free parking on Saturday (April 24) will be all day, rather than just for three hours.

Those visiting Cheadle on Saturday (April 24) will be able to make the most of three hours free parking thanks to Cheadle Town Council which has organised the initiative with Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC), the council which has remit over most of the town’s car parks.
The free parking coincides with Team Cheadle’s Buy British Week, which also falls on the same week of St George’s Day – which is on Friday (April 23).
A spokesman for Team Cheadle said: “Monday was the launch of Cheadle’s Buy British Week; an initiative organised by Team Cheadle after plans to celebrate St George’s Day with an event were decided against, because of Covid restrictions.
“A number of the shops on the High Street have put on special offers and promotions, on products that were made in Britain. Look out for the posters in shop windows.
“Adding to the festive atmosphere on the High Street, is the bunting and flags funded by Cheadle Town Council.”
On Friday evening for St George’s Day there will be a short live stream from the Team Cheadle Facebook page from 7pm – fb.com/teamcheadle.
The spokesman added: “The Buy British Week ends on Saturday (April 24), with free parking (for a maximum of three hours) on the main Tape Street Car Park which has been arranged by Cheadle Town Council with SMDC, making Saturday the perfect time to grab a bargain on the High Street.”
The news of free parking for the coming Saturday in Cheadle, comes after community leaders have been lobbying for such an initiative to help footfall come back to Moorland town’s high streets.
The matter had been discussed at the April 6 meeting of Cheadle Town Council, with councillors agreeing to write a letter from the town council to SMDC asking for free parking.
Cheadle Town Mayor Ian Plant told the Times & Echo this week: “Again Cheadle Town Council with the support of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council have secured free parking in the town for three hours. We have five days over a 12 month period to pick days we would want for free parking.”
Cllr Plant added: “We want to encourage people to come to shop in Cheadle and this goes a long way to bring people into the town and have a walk around Cheadle, whether as a tourist or a shopper.
“Footfall is what we want to see in the town and hopefully people will appreciate what is on offer.”
The Times & Echo contacted SMDC for a comment about the free parking but, at the time of print, no one had yet responded.
A ‘Cheadle High Street Welcomes You Back’ video has been produced by Team Cheadle to further promote the town. It can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZYNY2-mhmY.
The next Team Cheadle meeting will be taking place via Zoom on May 13 at 7pm. After that the meetings will take place every first Thursday of the month, via Zoom for the immediate future.
