PLANS are in motion for a special event which will see the Christmas festivities in a Moorlands town begin. The festive season is set to officially start in Cheadle on Saturday November 16, when the Christmas lights will be switched on during the annual event organised by Team Cheadle. This year the theme is Victorian Christmas, and everyone attending is invited to dress up to help invoke a traditional Christmas feel.
A spokesman for Team Cheadle said: “The event starts at 2pm and as usual, there will be live entertainment on stage outside Lulworth House, as well as a number of street entertainers performing throughout the event until 6pm.
“Santa’s Grotto, for the first time, will be in the Tudor House and managed by Creative Cheadle. Santa will be arriving at the event around 12.30pm (to be confirmed) and be in the grotto shortly afterwards.
“As Santa is expecting to be busy towards the end of the event, the head elf has suggested that people don’t dilly dally and visit Santa as early as possible.
“Trade stalls will be selling a variety of unique products; making this the ideal time to start Christmas shopping. There will also be plenty of street food and outlets selling things such as mulled wine and ciders.”
The Christmas lights will be switched on at 5pm by the Cheadle Mayor Ian Plant, who will be assisted by 13-year-old Hollie Tomkinson.
The Team Cheadle spokesman added: “Hollie has been selected as a thank you to her mother Karen, who dedicates much of her free time promoting Cheadle’s businesses and events on social media.
“The Christmas lights event is still in the planning stages, so expect plenty more announcements in the coming weeks.”
Maria and Ian Leyland from Cheadle are hosting a bingo night to raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and for the provision of heart screening for 14 to 35-year-olds in honour of their son Joseph who suddenly passed away in 2016 aged 16.
This will take place this on Saturday (November 2) at 7.30pm at Cheadle Cricket Club.
Tickets are £8 which includes a book of bingo tickets, the buffet and the raffle.
