Festive event to help fund world challenge

By timesecholife on in All News, Community News

TWO inspiring students are hosting a festive event this weekend, as part of their fund-raising to take part in a world challenge. Archie Whitehead and Alfie Bednall, who both attend Thomas Alleyne's Sixth Form in Uttoxeter, are currently raising money to go to Malawi in July 2020 with the World Challenge organisation. As part of their on-going fundraising to fund the rip, the duo are hosting a Christmas Gift Fair at Denstone Village Hall on Saturday, November 30 from midday until 4pm.

The event has been planned for all the family to enjoy and includes hand picked gift stalls from organic skincare, hand made homewares to delicious home made treats and much more.

There will also be a cafe serving home made soup, toasties, refreshments, cakes, mince pies and mulled wine; along with fun games for children of all ages, live music, a raffle and fun for everyone.

Archie and Alfie will be travelling to Malawi for a month next summer and their activities are set to include an expedition through the mountains and taking part in charity work to improve local educational facilities and opportunities for the children.

The pals have already hosted several fundraising events throughout the year and also completed the Coast to Coast Trail on bikes from Whitehaven to Sunderland in May. All these events have helped them get a step closer to their fund-raising targets.

Archie said: “We have hosted several successful fundraising events this year and are very grateful for the brilliant support from the local community to help us raise over £4,500 each to travel to Malawi.”

Alfie said: “This fair is our last event of the year and will hopefully be an opportunity for the community to enjoy a real festive atmosphere while getting some shopping done and meeting up with friends.”

World Challenge has been running educational expeditions since 1987, and the organisation runs its expeditions in the ethos of “Challenge, Participation and Environment”, to help open the minds and broaden the experience of young people.

Their teams consist of student participants, who they call challengers, an expedition leader, a school leader and possibly an expedition assistant depending on team size.

The challengers participate in a nine to 18 month team-building and skills development programme prior to the expedition. They also raise funds for the expedition, attend a training expedition weekend and help to plan the itinerary.

Anyone wishing to financially support the pair for their trip, can contact Archie Whitehead at or Alfie Bednall at
