The two councillor roles, which are both for wards within Cheadle, are being ‘advertised’ through notices on the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council website.

The position in Cheadle North East Ward became vacant following the passing of councillor Ian Whitehouse, who sadly passed away on November 30; while the vacancy in the Cheadle South East Ward became available when former councillor Peter Elkin decided to step down to retire in December.

On both Casual Vacancy Notices, which can be found at www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk/elections, Andrew Stokes, Returning Officer at SMDC, states: “Notice is hereby given that a casual vacancy exists for a councillor in the Cheadle South East (and also North East) ward of Staffordshire Moorlands.

“Where requests for a by-election are received then under the provisions of the Coronavirus Act 2020 the election will not take place, and the vacancy will be held open until it is filled at the election due to be held on Thursday, May 6, 2021.”

The Times & Echo contacted SMDC to ask for any update on these positions and if they would be going to election or not, to which we were directed to the above information on the SMDC website.
