A visit from a fun fair to a Moorlands town has been cancelled due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the district.
Warwick Fun Fairs was set to offer two weeks of fun for families at Tean Road Recreational Grounds in Cheadle as from today (June 4).
However, it has been cancelled due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the neighbouring Moorlands town of Leek.
Residents in Leek have today (June 4) received letters through the post from Staffordshire County Council (dated June 2) stating that more than 30 positive coronavirus cases have been recorded in the town.
Dr Richard Harling, on behalf of the county council, states in the letter: “Many of these are confirmed as the Indian Variant of Concern.
“The vast majority of these are linked to the outbreak across Westwood College, St Edward’s Middle School and Leek High School.”
In his letter, Dr Harling goes on to urge anyone who has links to all schools in Leek to get a PCR test, so that: “we can do everything we can to contain this outbreak quickly and reduce the risk to everyone in the town.”
Cheadle Town Council, which has remit over Tean Road Recreational Grounds, issued a statement today (June 4) at 4.50pm about the decision to cancel the fair which is locally known as Cheadle Wakes. The fair operator Warwick Fun Fairs has already arrived at the site.
A spokesman for Cheadle Town Council said: “It is with deep regret that the scheduled Warwick’s Funfair, planned for two weeks from Friday, June 4, 2021, has been cancelled at short notice.
“This decision has been taken following instruction from Public Health England, Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire County Council following the discovery of a Covid-19 outbreak in the Staffordshire Moorlands last week.”
They added: “Cheadle Town Council have done everything possible to comply with these directions whilst maintaining our relationship with Warwicks Funfair.
“We will make a commitment to the community to hold an event for the young people of Cheadle as soon as we are allowed.”
