A MAN has been arrested for dangerous driving and assaulting a police officer after his car ploughed through a bus shelter and into a church wall.

Witnesses reported a woman with a pushchair was forced to jump out of the way to avoid being mown down by the vehicle, which also collided with another car.

The incident, which happened in Ash Bank Road, Werrington on Monday afternoon, was caught on nearby CCTV cameras.

And a 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving, being unfit to drive through drink or drugs, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, theft, possession of a bladed implement and criminal damage.

The man, of no fixed abode, remained in custody on Tuesday afternoon.

Both he and the driver of another vehicle were treated for minor injuries at the scene of the crash, near the junction with Salters Lane.
