More than half a million people have fled the Eastern European country amidst the Russian invasion with civilians among those killed in the bombings and raids.

Many are staying to pick up arms and defend their country while others are sheltering in bunkers beneath the ground, a large number of whom are women and children.

Here in the Moorlands, a group of mums who live in Leek and Cheddleton, have started a kind-hearted initiative to collect items which are to be sent out to those still in Ukraine, as well as to those who have fled to neighbouring Poland.

Alexa Lloyd, Kelley Woolley, Izabela Tatler, and Rachel Chadwick have already collected two van loads and four car loads, as well as a pallet of goods which have been donated.

They are delivering their first lot of donated items today (Wednesday) to a main collection point in Manchester where the donations will be put onto lorries and driven across to Eastern Europe.

Alexa said: “We have been overwhelmed with the support we have had so far. Thank you to everyone.”

Alexa added that they are very happy to continue to accept suitable donations to help those in worn-torn Ukraine, or who are refugees in Poland.

She said: “We are aiming to carry on but we will need more volunteers to help sort through donations, people to help with admin, and also drivers with vans to take the donations to the main collection points.

We are currently full up with donations of clothes. The items we are looking for at the moment include: first aid equipment, bandages, wipes, nappies, sanitary products, camping equipment and sleeping bags.”

Collection points so far, are at: St Mary’s School in Cruso Street, Barnfields Garage in Sunnyhills Road, Den Engels in Stanley Street, and the Leek School of Dance in Novi Lane.

To keep up to date on the group’s initiative for Ukraine, find ‘Leek and Cheddleton Aid Support for Ukraine’ on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Bury & Hilton in Leek is also collecting to help those in and from Ukraine.

Residential Lettings Manager Catherine Holland said: “We are collecting the following items: foil survival blankets; nappies; sanitary towels; first aid kits; sleeping bags; metal cups; thermal clothing; shampoo, toothbrushes, hairbrushes; bandages; children’s clothes; small toys and crayons.

We are working with Macclesfield Ukrainian aid collection point, they deliver the aid to Manchester on a Friday, it is then being sent to Zakarpattia, Ukraine.”

Catherine added: “Currently there is no cut of date for collections.

All the aid will be used for regular deliveries made from the UK to the Hungarian border and then to Ukrainian volunteers who work with the refugees directly.”

Bury & Hilton is situated at 6 Market Street in Leek, and donated items can be dropped off anytime between 9am and5pm.

In the rural village of Hartington, the Hartington Farm Shop and Cafe is also acting as a drop off point for such donations. They are open for drop-offs on Tuesday to Sunday between 9am and 4.30pm.
